A project information sheet is being delivered to about 16,000 homes. “It outlines what we are planning to do and invites feedback until the end of August,’’ Mr Connors Pete said. Connors The work on SH74 is part of a nationwide $600 million safe road and roadsides programme which NZTA is delivering on behalf of the Government. The goal of the programme is to make many rural routes on the highway network safer over the next six years. It aims to prevent deaths and serious injury crashes through relatively simple measures such as rumble strips, road shoulder widening, safety barriers, better signage and speed limit changes.

AFTER ONE death and 13 serious injuries, safety improvements are to be installed on QE II Drive from Innes Rd to Burwood Rd. The section of State Highway 74 is classified as a high risk rural road. One person has died and 13 have been seriously injured along there in the past 10 years. To improve safety, the New Zealand Transport Agency is proposing to install median barriers to keep traffic apart and reduce the risk of headon crashes. It is also proposing to install flexible road safety barriers on both sides of the road to stop drivers running off the road and to protect pedestrians and cyclists using the shared pathway. “We appreciate this road is only going to get busier with new residential developments and schools opening in the area,” NZTA transport system manager Pete Connors said. The proposed safety improvements will reduce the risk of crashes, make the stretch of road safer for

IF YOU are an up and coming young league or union player the world is your oyster. More and more of the province’s young oval ball talent is being picked up by big spending league clubs and rugby franchises seeking to stock up their ranks for the future. On page 6 today, we reveal 17-year-old Linwood Keas league centre Graeme Patu-Vaega’au will move to Auckland at the end of the year after signing a three-year contract with the Warriors. The NRL clubs and Super Rugby franchises have a wealth of talent to choose from but it takes a special kind of player to make it to the top. Let’s hope Patu-Vaega’au is one of a new breed to take the Warriors forward when he hits the top grade in two or three years. – Barry Clarke

Work on hub to begin in November A COMMUNITY centre will return to the heart of Woolston with construction beginning in November. Plans for the new Woolston Community Facility on Ferry Rd include a nod to the distinctive brick of the former Woolston Community Library which once occupied the site. An artist’s impression of the new facility shows the community’s desire Selena for brick and Robertson timber in the building is at the forefront of the design process. City council project manager Selena Robertson said the new facility would restore a focal point for the Woolston community. “We can’t wait to begin work on this new facility later this year and bring a community hub back to the village,” she said. “We have had two rounds of public consultation seeking comments about what should be included in the building, how community groups want to use it and a preference of materials

The building would include a public toilet, the volunteer library, a small meeting room and a hall for community groups to use. The former Library was badly

In Brief SCHOOL FENCES UP Fencing has gone up around the site that will become the new Shirley Boys’ High School and Avonside Girls’ High School joint campus. Ground improvement work has begun and will be completed by late November, which is when work on the school’s foundations will start. MUSICIAN SELECTED Avonside Girls’ High School year 9 student Hazel Wilson has earned herself a place in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Brass Band. Hazel will be playing second horn in the band. She had to audition for a place in the prestigious band, which consists of 42 of New Zealand’s most talented high school brass and percussion musicians. PUPILS DESIGN PLAY AREA Te Waka Unua School pupils have helped design a new playground for Woolston Park. The city council wants to build a playground next to the school and remove the old one. The pupils have consulted with five pre-schools to come up with suggestions for the new equipment and layout. Consultation will begin at the end of September, with construction planned for April.

Getting active for health

JACKIE HOULE is a changed woman compared to six months ago. Suffering from social anxiety, diabetes and struggling to come to terms with the death of her sister seven years ago, Ms Houle, who lives in New Brighton, was at a crossroads as she went to her doctor’s office. A brave decision to try the green prescription’s eight-week Be Active programme for people who want to increase their level of physical activity, has Ms Houle spending more time on her newly-purchased exercise cycle than her couch. Participants in the programme try out a range of activities such as aqua jogging, gym, sports and dance. They are supported by Sport Canterbury staff and discuss motivation, healthy eating and managing stress – topics that support a healthy lifestyle “I’ve lost 22 pounds (10kg), the panic attacks that I used to suffer, particularly in social situations, are not nearly as bad and my blood sugar levels have dropped. I’ve even purchased an exercycle which I definitely wouldn’t have done prior to the (Be Active) programme,” she said. Ms Houle, who moved from her native Canada 11 years ago

She has not been back to Canada since the tragedy but thanks to her progress over the past nine months, she is planning a trip back home next year. “That’s all been part of it,” she said: “Losing my sister made me really depressed for a very long time; we were very close. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and my health and received so

much support. I’m glad I took the chance and signed up for the programme.” The Be Active programme begins this week in Aranui, Lincoln, Spreydon and Bishopdale. Ms Houle encouraged anyone to give it a go regardless of fitness level, age or health issues. People can refer themselves into the programme or talk to their GP about a green prescription.

Chinese students visit Avonside, Shirley STUDENTS FROM Avonside Girls and Shirley Boys’ High Schools will have the opportunity to work with their young Chinese counterparts. Twenty-six students from Sichuan province will visit the city for the Innovation and Technology Youth Summit, which runs from Thursday to Wednesday. They will be welcomed by the Avonside and Bree Shirley students Loverich who will host them during the mornings of the fiveday summit. The summit aims to bring young people together to solve a ‘global grand challenge’ using innovative technology, and explore some of the issues facing the world today. ChristchurchNZ programme manager Bree Loverich said it will provide a chance for students to experience different cultures, approaches to teamwork and how to apply their skills to reallife problems. “This is a fantastic opportunity for all the students involved to put some of their study into

practice,” she said. “Not only will they learn from each other, but they’ll have the support of the best in the business along the way – including local tech entrepreneurs, Ministry of Awesome experts, academics and teachers.” The students will participate in the summit programme in the afternoons, which will be held at the EPIC Innovation Hub. On Thursday, the Sichuan province students will be welcomed by Mayor Lianne Dalziel before they tour the Innovation Precinct. The summit is sponsored by ChristchurchNZ and supported by Christchurch Educated in partnership with the Ministry of Awesome.

The Palms gives back to schools WITH HELP from the nearby mall, Banks Avenue Primary School will soon be riding the airwaves. The Palms Shopping Centre’s “Shop for your School” campaign saw 11 primary schools entering the competition to win money, each with a different goal in mind. Throughout June, families who signed up were able to take their receipts for shopping to The Palms and in exchange, receive points for their school. In first place was Banks Ave, which received $3000 for its efforts, Mairehau Primary came in second, winning $2000, and third was Queenspark with $1000. Marshland and Shirley Primary Schools each received $500. “It’s been a great competition for getting the whole school involved in a common cause, and the prize money is an added bonus. We have encouraged the children to bring their receipts to school to get a heart token, and when they earn 50 tokens they get a values wrist band for togetherness,” Toni Burnside Banks Ave principal said. As for the prize money, Mrs Burnside said the fun has already been had. “As a school we are always short of money so spending it would not be difficult. We have

just set up a school radio station and would love to use the money for two chairs for our radio hosts,” she said. But how the rest of the money is spent is up to the children and their families, who did all the hard work. Runner-up Mairehau Primary also enjoyed the school spirit of the competition. Bridey Hentschel chairwoman

of the Mairehau home and school committee said the school encouraged students to bring in their receipts and the school donated them collectively. “We are so grateful for the prize money and hope to use it for more sports equipment and for school trips,” Ms Hentschel said. Queenspark Primary hopes

Sooty shearwater numbers on the rise By Sarla Donovan NUMBERS OF titi, or sooty shearwater, continue to rise on Banks Peninsula. The efforts of the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust have seen numbers of nesting adults double in just a few years. In 2010 there were 27 adult pairs nesting. Now that figure is up to 50, thanks in large part to a predator proof fence. Formed in 2001, the trust arose out of a project called Wildside, set up by farmer Mark Armstrong 25 years ago. There were only one pair of titi left in Canterbury in 1995, so Mr Armstrong built a chicken wire fence around the remaining two and also established a dense defence of predator traps. This was enough to ensure the pair’s survival and six years later the first chick fledged. By 2009, there were 21 adult pairs nesting and one chick fledging. The following year, 27 adult pairs nested with 20 chicks fledging.

Warriors deal for Keas centre NEW HOME: Downer has applied to the city council for temporary use of this site at 10 Shirley Rd. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN

Application lodged to use community centre site By Julia Evans THE SITE of the Shirley Community Centre is set to become the new home of Downer Group. The space has been used as headquarters for various different construction companies since the centre was demolished in 2012. And with its rebuild not expected to begin until 2019, the city council is processing the latest application for its use. Downer is set to occupy the 10 Shirley Rd site as part of the Dudley Creek Flood Remediation work. Downer’s application said that the established facilities at the site are close to where it needs to work and would be ideal. However, there will be implications for neighbours including

construction traffic and heavy vehicles, noise, dust and run-off. But Downer said it will limit unnecessary vehicle movement and use the existing environmental management plan. And it has a dedicated communications team to deal with all concerns and issues. Working hours at the site will be from 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 7.30am to 12.30pm on Saturdays. The Dudley Creek work is expected to finish in May 2018. It comes after residents in Guild St had issues with dust, noise and run-off from neighbouring Worthington Contracting. However, the company left the area to appease residents and moved to a new site in North Canterbury.

By Gordon Findlater LINWOOD KEAS centre Graeme Patu-Vaega’au will move to Auckland at the end of the year after signing a three-year contact with the Warriors. Patu-Vaega’au, 17, has been with the Keas since a junior and made his debut with the premier team on April 29 against the Riccarton Knights. “He scored an outstanding try in that game and has cemented a spot since then,” said Linwood Keas coach Andrew Auimatagi. It was Patu-Vaega’au’s coach that made the Warriors aware of his talent. Auimatagi also has a role with the NRL club as its South Island talent scout. “He’s always had a pretty good frame and there’s always been something about him,” said Auimatagi. Last year, Auimatagi gave Warriors recruitment and development manager Tony Iro a heads up on Patu-Vaega’au. Iro had a chance to see the young centre earlier this year and he obviously made an impression. The Catholic Cathedral College student’s performances at premier level have also seen him involved in the Canterbury Bulls wider training squad. He is one of three players from Canterbury to secure a contract with the Warriors this year, joining St Thomas’ of

They celebrate yet another glorious anniversary after being forced to relocate to this premises after the earthquakes in 2011. Fendalton Dental Surgery, on the high profile corner of Idris & Glandovey Roads has been looking after the dental needs of the local community as well as the wider Christchurch area since 2011. HOME & HEATING

Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. There are a wide range of heat pumps available with different heating outputs so it is important to select the correct size for your requirements that will handle the job but not be unnecessarily overpowered. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by good technical after sales service. Ensure your heat pump is installed by an accredited installer. This will not only ensure correct installation of your heat pump, but also validate the manufacturers warranty. Other things to consider when choosing a heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi capabilities. Heating is a major investment in your home and it is vital to get the right advice. Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply, installation and servicing of all major brands of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as to which system will suit your application the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no obligation quote and will come to your home to see what is required. Visit our website at www.enviromaster.co.nz.

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

ve Remo ells ng sm i k o o c am! e t s d an

wasted using a traditional positive pressure system is recovered, resulting in significant energy savings and therefore lower heating or cooling costs. Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation systems have been considerably more expensive than traditional positive pressure systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390 balanced pressure system can be installed for a similar price as a traditional positive pressure system. SENIOR LIVING Osteoporosis is a serious condition

GO-Advanced ...but research shows it can be reversed! Omega-PC Fish Oil It is well known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with a higher amounts of omega-3 in their diet are known to have lower cardiovascular disease and, in many cases, better overall health. Recent research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the ageing process. Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new standards in fish oil as it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids. Studies have shown GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better absorbed, leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs thru giving the potential for more health benefits.

Osteoporosis is not taken as a serious condition by most people! Most people don’t realise they have osteoporosis until a fracture happens, as there are usually no signs or symptoms. Fractures can commonly be debilitating with chronic pain and can lead to early mortality. Fractures kill more women than all gynaecological cancers put together and one in six women taken to hospital with a hip fracture, will not come out alive and men fare even worse. Around one in three women and one in twelve men are affected with osteoporosis. The most common osteoporotic fractures are of the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip. Vertebral collapse is a compression fracture and causes back pain often with shooting pains due to compression of the nerves. Multiple vertebral fractures lead to a stooped posture, loss of height and chronic pain with reduced mobility. Hip fractures, in particular, usually require prompt GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced surgery, as there is a serious risk associated from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish with it of deep vein thrombosis and using a new advanced and more natural pulmonary embolism leading to increased cold extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile found mortality. One study of 1,649 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who had had at least one fracture were divided into two groups. Both groups took vitamin D and calcium supplements. One group were also given 680mg/day of strontium. After the three year study the strontium group showed an unheard of average bone growth of 8.1%. This study shows that osteoporosis can not only be halted but may even be reversed and without the side effects of common osteoporosis drugs. BREAKTHROUGH AGAINST OSTEOPOROSIS Osteoporosis, the weakening of the bone is a serious health threat that often leads to severe pain, fractures & early mortality. Research has found the bones can be re-mineralised & strengthened when the required nutrients are present. Minerals calcium, magnesium & vitamins D3 & K2 are essential but are not enough in many cases. A missing link appears to be the mineral strontium. Research shows strontium to positively affect bone density. - Supports strong healthy bones, teeth & nails - Is a naturally occurring mineral often lacking in the modern diet - Found in healthy bones & teeth but lacking in people with osteoporosis

GREAT food and great people - that’s what Coasters Tavern is all about. A modern replica of a true West Coaster’s bar where you’re guaranteed a warm welcome. e tavern originally opened on Daniels Road in Redwood over 20 years ago. Recent times has seen it expand into the site next door and undergo major renovation and refit. e result is impressive. A modern yet charmingly rustic establishment with an emphasis on genuine West Coast hospitality. e upgraded bar and dining area open out to a sheltered north facing courtyard. A new roomy gaming room now occupies the east end of the tavern. ere’s full TAB facilities, plentiful TV monitors for live sport, an outstanding GastroPub menu, and every sort of beverage available to wash it down. “We also offer a fantastic social club that has numerous events, including Golf, Horse Racing, Christmas Functions, Mystery Bus Trips, Bottle Draws, Raffles
